AUSTRIAN POST STRENGTHENS ITS PRESENCE ON THE GERMAN PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET

One clearly-defined aspect of Austrian Post’s strategy is its focus on growth in the parcel segment, encompassing the specialty area of pharmaceuticals.

One clearly-defined aspect of Austrian Post’s strategy is its focus on growth in the parcel segment, encompassing the specialty area of pharmaceuticals. Against the backdrop of its intensified concentration on the pharmaceutical business, Austrian Post has cooperated with investors to develop a completely new, lean concept for the pharmaceutical wholesale trade. AEP direkt stands for Apotheken-Einkaufs-Partner in German (Pharmacy Purchasing Partner). It is a full-line pharmaceutical distribution company which will be able to supply all German pharmacies on a daily basis starting in the fourth quarter of 2013.

AEP direkt offers a new full-line pharmaceutical wholesaler to German pharmacies. Customers of AEP direkt can choose from the fully-stocked, entire product range of the desired pharmaceutical products. Delivery then takes place on the next day by the 2,500 drivers of trans-o-flex. AEP direkt operates a central storage facility in Alzenau, one of the newest and largest pharmaceutical logistics centres in Germany. The logistic structures of AEP direkt are lean and can thus permanently pass on cost advantages to all pharmacies. In addition to customary services (orders via pharmacy software, BTM and perishables transport, returns, collective invoices, etc.) and the entire range of pharmaceutical goods, AEP direkt offers a maximum level of simplicity and transparency with respect to defining terms and conditions and invoicing.

“Health care is a strongly growing market. For this reason, we have decided in collaboration with German and Austrian industry experts to launch a new service offering in this important market. This very interesting business model is new and unique, and ideally complements our business in Germany”, says Georg Pölzl, Chief Executive Officer of Austrian Post.

The pharmaceutical wholesale market in Germany along with its discount system has become confusing and complex for pharmacists and lacks transparency. The business model of AEP direkt is simple: one central warehouse, nationwide delivery once a day without cost-intensive sales and distribution structures. All this means lower costs and higher discounts, which will be passed on to all pharmacies in Germany, regardless of their size.

“Our subsidiary trans-o-flex will support its new customer AEP direkt in its market launch on the basis of its logistics competence. Like many other companies, AEP direkt will also consciously rely on the experience and service portfolio of trans-o-flex, the market leader in deliveries to pharmacies“, says Peter Umundum, Member of the Management Board of Austrian Post and Director of the Parcel & Logistics Division, in explaining the strengths of Austrian Post’s new strategic investment.

AEP direkt was founded by Austrian Post as the lead investor, a start-up financer in the health care sector and private investors. Jens Graefe und Markus Eckermann, two very experienced industry experts, were lured to manage the operations of AEP direkt. They will be supported by a team of specialists from the wholesale business, industry and pharmacies. At present, AEP GmbH employs a staff of about 50 employees and is based in Alzenau in Lower Franconia.
