2003

Increase in productivity for postal deliveries

Pressemeldung from 10.03.2003

Reduction by 1,000 full-time jobs until end of year
Increase of premiums and new volume-based rates for advertising material result in average increase in earnings of € 470 per delivery staff member and year.

Within the scope of the intensified restructuring measures being taken at Österreichische Post AG, a new system for staff demand assessment is being applied in the distribution sector as of 1 March 2003. New timeframe values are in force since 1 March in all delivery units for determining the respective need for personnel. For a number of delivery service activities (from the sorting of postal items to the distances traveled to the delivery of postal items), the respective timeframes have been adapted to the changed circumstances. This has been made possible by changed workflows and the use of new resources.
The calculation models in force before 1 March 2003 were based on the originally existing 2,000 delivery units. The new distribution concept, about 50% of which has been implemented so far, reduces the number of locations to about 450.

The savings achieved through the reassessment are being passed on partly to the postal employees in the form of higher remunerations. An increase by 10% in compensation for the delivery of items without an address results in an average increase in earnings per postal delivery staff member and year of € 470.

Österreichische Post AG’s budget plan for the financial year 2003 provides for a continuation of the necessary reductions in HR costs. Among the total reductions scheduled for 2003, which amount to 1,455 full-time jobs, the company’s distribution sector will account for about 1,000 full-time jobs. By reducing the number of substitutes hired to replace staff on vacation and/or sick leave and by not hiring any new staff, the organization tries to keep the number of employees who will lose their jobs as low as possible.
