“Turandot” stamp for opera festival in St. Margarethen

Pressemeldung from 08.07.2003

Special issue exclusively for audience of opera festival

On 24 July 2003, the date of the opening night of this year’s opera festival staged in the Roman quarry at St. Margarethen, Österreichische Post AG presents a special issue called “Turandot”.
The designer of this stamp with a nominal value of € 0.55 is Renate Gruber. It will be produced by the Austrian State Printing Office using halftone photogravure. 700,000 stamps will be issued.
The Turandot special issue is available in approximately 500 of the major post offices in Austria.
In addition to the stamp, Österreichische Post AG has also prepared a limited-number special sheet available exclusively to the audience of the opera festival at St. Margarethen and from Österreichische Post AG’s collector’s service at a price of € 5.

“The stamp is really beautiful. The fact that Österreichische Post AG has issued this stamp underlines the significance the St. Margarethen opera festival has gained in Austria and throughout Europe. The stamp is bound to be sold out shortly and thus become a coveted collector’s item”, comments festival manager Wolfgang Werner, who is convinced that the Turandot special issue will be a success.
Anton Wais, Österreichische Post AG’s CEO, is likewise optimistic that by offering this Turandot special issue, Österreichische Post AG can contribute to making the opera festival held at the Roman quarry at St. Margarethen, an important event for Austria as a tourist destination, even better known than it is now, both in Austria and abroad.

The operatic performance of “Turandot” on Europe’s largest natural-setting stage is expected to draw a total of 100,000 visitors from 24 July to 24 August. Directed by Gianfranco de Bosio, 400 performers from eleven nations will take part in staging Puccini’s classic opera.

Featuring cultural topics on its stamps has become a well-established tradition with Österreichische Post AG. It was only this April that Österreichische Post AG dedicated a special issue block to opera critic Marcel Prawy, who when still alive was one of the key patrons and friends of the opera festival at St. Margarethen. The stamp block as well as a special Österreichische Post AG edition including a CD with Marcel Prawy’s favorite melodies is likewise available at the festival.
