Austrian energy market

Benefits of a liberalised energy market

Every Austrian household can choose their energy provider.

  • In Austria, approximately 150 power providers and roughly 50 gas providers (as of April 2019) offer their services. This means that there is a wide range of offers and rates.
  • There are national providers that offer their services in the entire country as well as regional energy providers.
  • All power and gas providers are fully independent of each other and therefore offer completely different rates. As a result, it definitely pays off to compare prices.
  • Unlike the power and gas provider, the grid operator for your residence is always the same and ensures that there is uninterruped power and gas supply. You would merely be switching to a new energy provider.

Safe energy supply

E-Control is the regulatory authority for the power and gas market in Austria. Its main task is to make sure that power and natural gas are available now and in the future. Therefore, you do not have to worry about your personal energy supply:

  • Even if you switch to a different energy provider, your grid operator will remain the same. In terms of infrastructure and lines, nothing will change for you.
  • Even in the unlikely case of a service provider bankruptcy, there will be no service interruption because E-Control will immediately assign an alternate provider to you.

Energy sources

There are three main energy sources:

  • Renewable sources of energy: hydroelectric power, solar energy, biomass, biogas, and geothermal energy
  • Fossil sources of energy: brown coal, stone coal, peat, natural gas, and petroleum
  • Nuclear sources of energy

In Austria, the number of energy providers that only offer green power increases every year. At the same time, the percentage of fossil energy decreases steadily. At private households, this percentage is just 10%. We encourage you to compare rates with the Österreichische Post energy cost calculator. It is up to you to decide if you prefer to receive exclusively green energy in the future.

One private household, 2 contracts

At your private household, you will always have to contracts: one with your energy provider and one with your grid operator. Your grid operator installs and maintains your energy connection and keeps track of your energy consumption, for which they charge you a grid free. Your energy provider, on the other hand, purchases or produces the energy that you will ultimately use, and charge you depending on the amount of kilowatts you use.

Don't forget: all you have to do is compare the rates and choose the rate that suits you. We will take care of everything else.

Energy prices in Austria broken down

In Austria, energy costs include consumption costs, the grid fee, as well as taxes and duties (see graph). For the rate comparison, we obviously take into account all costs.
