Vienna Letter Center: Fully operational from Monday, 2 September 2002
Pressemeldung from 29.08.2002
Euro 110 million invested in one of Europe’s most up-to-date logistics centers - four million items handled each day
On 2 September 2002, the Vienna Letter Center, which is located in Vienna’s 23rd district, will become fully operational as scheduled. 1,200 highly qualified staff members will then work around the clock seven days a week in three shifts, handling about four million items, which amounts to about half of all of Austria’s letter volume. The change-over of Österreichische Post AG’s logistics without an interruption in operations is the largest venture of this kind ever undertaken by an Austrian company During trial operation, which started at the beginning of July, the sorting machinery and transport logistics were fine-tuned, with continuously increasing volumes.
EUR 110 million for state-of-the-art technology on 30,000 m²
The construction work for the 30,000 m² Vienna Letter Center covered more than 330,000 m³. 5.5 km of materials-handling equipment, 57 unloading gates plus an individual railway connection were set up. The volume of investment for the Vienna Letter Center amounts to Euro 110 million.
The Vienna Letter Center has been designed according to the latest ergonomic and occupational medicine findings: automation technology with newly developed unloading robots is used for lifting and carrying heavy loads. Maximum noise reduction and noise insulation in all workplaces, optimum constant light intensity, and biological air conditioning combine to form optimum conditions for the staff working in the new center.
The core of the new logistics operations speeds up operations
The Vienna Letter Center, one of the largest and most state-of-the-art logistics centers in Europe, forms the core of Österreichische Post AG’s new logistics operations. Concentrating the collection, sorting, and distribution processes from formerly 14 to now 6 state-of-the-art logistics centers (Vienna, Upper Austria, Salzbrug, Styria, Carinthia, and Tyrol) makes for more speed and simplified operations. In the future, at least 95% of all domestic items will arrive at their destination within one day after having been posted.
