Österreichische Post AG’s congratulations take the form of a special issue stamp
420,000 blocks of four stamps each available from 3 June
Within the scope of a host of activities surrounding the 250th anniversary of the foundation of the zoological garden of Schönbrunn, the special issue stamp “Zoological garden Schönbrunn - 250 years” issued by Österreichische Post AG was presented on 28 May 2002. In the Schönbrunn zoo’s famous pavilion, Dr. Helmut Pechlaner, director of the zoological garden, and Dipl. Ing. Dr. Jörn Kaniak, managing director of Österreichische Post AG, jointly introduced the new stamp to the general public.
The block consists of four individual stamps denominated in EUR 0.51 / 0.58 / 0.87 / and 1.38 respectively. The pre-issue date is 29 May 2002, the issue date is 3 June 2002. The block, of which 420,000 copies will be issued, or the 1,680,000 individual stamps will be available from 3 June 2002.
The block, which was designed by renowned artist Adolf Tuma, features “animals on land, in the water, and in the air”. It has been produced by the Austrian State Printing Office using a combination printing process (half-tone photogravure and copper plate engraving).
The stamp was engraved by probably the best stamp engraver in the world: Prof. Wolfgang Seidel. A first-day postmark (legend: Zoological garden Schönbrunn - 250 years. design: mountain lion, stork, zebra) is available from the central postmark unit at 1150 Vienna or from Post.Mobil at Schönbrunn zoological garden, Tirolerhof, on 3 June 2002, from 9.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m.
