Pressemeldung from 14.04.2003

First special issue block featuring both a round and a rectangular stamp, special postmark and special sheet
Österreichische Post AG supports panda research

Österreichische Post AG has now dedicated a stamp block to the new darlings of all visitors to Schönbrunn zoo, the China-born panda bears Yang Yang and Long Hui - meanwhile also known as “Sissi” and “Franzl” respectively.
Today, Monday 14 April 2003, zoo director Helmut Pechlaner and Anton Wais, Österreichische Post AG’s CEO, together presented the special issue block “Panda bears” at the Schönbrunn zoo.
The “Panda bears” block, which had initially not been included in the issue program, now for the first time in the history of Austrian philately features a combination of a round and a rectangular stamp in one and the same block.

Österreichische Post AG supports international panda research
Adolf Tuma, who already designed the “Zoological garden Schönbrunn - 250 years“ block issued in 2002 and recently elected the most beautiful stamp of the year 2002, has also created the „Panda bears“ design. The round stamp has a nominal value of € 1.00, the rectangular one a value of € 0.75. A total of 1.5 million special issue blocks are available in all of the 1,669 Österreichische Post AG outlets.
From the revenue of each block sold, Österreichische Post AG donates € 0.10 to the international panda research.

Special sheet as entry ticket to the zoo
On the first day of issue, a special postmark will be applied as well. The design, also created by Adolf Tuma, shows a panda at one of its favorite pastimes: eating bamboo.
In addition, Österreichische Post AG has had 100,000 copies of a special sheet of the block produced.
The special sheet doubles as entry ticket to Schönbrunn zoo as well as a bonus voucher for a €1 reduction on a child’s entry ticket. Like the special issue block, the special sheet is available in all Austrian post offices.
