Saint Elisabeth and the Miracle of the Roses 05.10.2023

Special stamp sacred art

The mosaic of Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia depicts the Legend of the Miracle of the Roses. It can be seen in the St. Francis of Assisi Church on Vienna's Mexikoplatz Square.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Emperor Francis Joseph I's reign in 1898, a church was built in his honour, the Emperor Francis Joseph Jubilee Church, located in the newly settled area following the regulation of the Danube. This striking church was designed by Victor Luntz and construction began in 1900, with its consecration taking place in 1913. In memory of Empress Elisabeth, who was assassinated in 1898, the Empress Elisabeth Memorial Chapel was established in the west nave of the church. It is one of Vienna's most beautiful sacred spaces, lavishly adorned with marble and Art Nouveau elements. The Elisabeth mosaic was designed by Carl Ederer and produced by the Tyrolean Stained Glass and Mosaic Workshop. The inscription next to the medallion, embellished with gold and gemstones, reads: "In pious memory of Empress and Queen Elisabeth.”
