Ready for the gallery

From the roadside to centre stage: nine selected letterboxes will now become our symbol for art in public space.

Nine artists, nine letterboxes, nine personal messages: everyday letterboxes have been transformed into artworks that encourage contemplation in public space. They speak of connection, handwriting, and the magic of writing a letter – entirely analogue, entirely personal. Following an exhibition in Vienna, the artist-designed letterboxes will be permanently installed in public spaces across Austria’s nine provincial capitals.

The video

The artists

Nine artists, nine perspectives on letterboxes. Every design tells a personal story about writing, sending, and receiving letters. They all show how much emotion and meaning a seemingly simple object can contain.

Sebastian Schager

Sebastian Schager is a visual artist from Vienna. His work explores symbols, signs and cultural codes, inviting viewers to reflect rather than offering clear-cut messages. Instead, his pieces open up spaces for personal interpretation. With deliberate ambiguity, Schager combines religious symbols, tears, and iconographic fragments to create complex visual worlds that resist any singular reading. He is particularly interested in the tension between individual perception and collective visual language.
