Hotel Elixhauser Wirt 24.06.2025

Special stamp Elixhauser

The historic Hotel Elixhauser Wirt in Elixhausen near Salzburg is Austria’s oldest family-owned business.

The estate on which the hotel now stands was first documented as a tavern in 1334. From 1480, the Elixhauser family ran both the inn and the adjoining farm. In 1796, following the marriage of Theresa Elixhauser and Johann Georg Gmachl, the property took on the name Gmachl. Today, it once again bears its original name Elixhauser Wirt and is now managed by the 23rd generation of the family. Michaela Gmachl took over the business from her parents in 2005 and continues the long-standing family tradition. This 4-star hotel offers seminar facilities, a wellness and spa area, and a gourmet restaurant specialising in refined regional cuisine. Among the culinary highlights are classic Austrian dishes such as Tafelspitz and Apfelstrudel – the latter prepared according to the original recipe handed down from the grandmother, and both proudly featured on the stamp.
