EN
The Viennese poet and writer Ernst Jandl was a master of language, renowned for his playful and experimental use of words.
Jandl addressed political and social issues and, in addition to poetry, also wrote plays, radio dramas and prose. His experimental poetry and sound poetry initially provoked outrage, but from the 1970s onwards he gained recognition and his influence on Austria’s cultural scene grew steadily. The poet Friederike Mayröcker was his congenial life partner. Ernst Jandl would have turned 100 this year. Following his death in 2000, he was laid to rest in an honorary grave at Vienna’s Central Cemetery. Many of his best-known poems, such as ottos mops, schtzngrmm and falamaleikum, he also performed himself in spectacular readings. The quotation on the stamp – “Die Rache der Sprache ist das Gedicht” (“The revenge of language is the poem”) – reflects his creative engagement with language.
