Day of issue of the commemorative stamp "Lentos Art Museum Linz"

The iconic Lentos Art Museum in Linz is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023. Austrian Post marks this anniversary with a commemorative stamp in the "Modern architecture in Austria" series.

The building was constructed in 2003 as designed by Zurich-based architects Weber & Hofer. The history of the museum goes back to 1946, when the Neue Galerie was founded as a lending museum for Wolfgang Gurlitt's collection. The city of Linz acquired the Gurlitt Collection in 1953, and the museum became the Neue Galerie of the city of Linz - Wolfgang Gurlitt Museum. Subsequently, it relocated into the Lentia 2000 complex and eventually to the newly built Lentos Art Museum.

In 2015, the city of Linz purchased the archive of the Linz-born artist Valie Export and incorporated it into Lentos. Ever since, Lentos been collaborating with the University of Art and Design Linz to run the Valie Export Center as a research centre for media and performance art. Housing art from the early 20th century to present, Lentos Art Museum ranks among the most renowned museums of modern and contemporary art in Austria.
