Day of issue of the commemorative stamp "Butterfly - Eriogaster catax"

The new commemorative stamp series "Pericularium – endangered insects" addresses the topical issue of insect extinction with beautiful motifs. The first motif in the series is the eastern eggar (Eriogaster catax). On the day of issue, the artist Alexandra Kontriner, born in 1980 in Tryol, presented her art project “Pericularium” created in collaboration with the Natural Science Collections of the Tyrolean Regional Museums, which includes 29 drawings of animals that are either extinct or highly endangered in Austria or in Tyrol. The artist depicted every animal individually on an A5-sized white sheet with pencil and watercolours in its original size, a deliberate staging intended to remind us of a specimen from a past animal world at display in a museum to draw attention to the extinction of species.
